Empanadas of all fillings and flavors ruled the day at Chef Contos Kitchen and Store (CCKS) during Chef Courtney Contos’ first cook-off of 2015 on Saturday, Jan. 24. Forrest Black took first place with his Caballo Blanco, a lamb empanada. The name comes from a song by the band Laid Back.
Kendall Black took second place with her creole-style empanadas with shrimp and homemade Andouille sausage. This is the first time Kendall has competed in a CCKS cook-off.
The tasteful judges included Hen of the Wood pastry chef Andrew Lestrougeon and Charlie Papillo from WVMT’s Charlie, Ernie, and Lisa.
Don’t worry if you missed this round. CCKS will be holding another cook-off this summer, although the theme has yet to be determined. For more information, please call (802) 497-3942 or visit www.chefcontos.com. To see Forrest’s winning empanada recipe, visit www.chefcontos.blogspot.com.
