If you live in Shelburne, you’ve most likely eaten pizza at Cucina Antica or maybe you own wool products from Shakey Ground Farm, in Charlotte. However, have you ever wondered where the vegetables on that pizza are grown, or what kind of sheep produce the wool in your sweater? After participating in the FEED program, students at Shelburne Community School (SCS) would be able to tell you.
The SCS FEED program aims to educate students about the connection between healthy food, Vermont farms, and good nutrition. What better way to illustrate the importance of “eating local” than putting the spotlight on our town’s own Farmers’ Market? As another kickoff to the school year, students were recently given the challenge to find answers to scavenger hunt questions at the Shelburne Farmers’ Market, designed to introduce them and get them talking to local farmers and food related business owners.
There were over 50 entries from students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Completed and correct entries were randomly selected so each grade level had a winner. They are: Will Myers, kindergarten; Henry Galloway, 1st grade; Gianna Ostlund, 2nd grade; Sadie Mauro, 3rd grade; Colin Haliburton, 4th grade; Jack Rutz, 5th grade; and Kira Serisky, 6th grade.
Thank you to Cucina Antica, Craig’s Premium Ice Cream, Stony Loam Farm, Maple Blues Delights, and Rustic Wraps for providing prizes to the winners.
