Adam Bunting’s next step in his educational career is returning to his high school alma mater, Champlain Valley Union High School in Hinesburg. Bunting has already walked the halls there as a student, teacher, and house director, but now he will be the next school principal.
After spending three years as principal of Montpelier High School, he’s back at CVU, taking over the helm from former principal Jeff Evans. “There’s a reason why I’ve always been attracted to this building, and keep coming back,” Bunting said in the interview.
Since his days at Connecticut College he’s felt the call to help other people, he said. “I became interested in others and drawing out of them what they wanted to do,” he said of his college years.
Bunting said he has a clear view of his role as school principal. “I see my job as principal as one that keeps focus on the values of the organization and what drives it,” he said. “I spent my first week meeting with staff to discuss what CVU values are and how we can support our work with students.”
Bunting is intent on cementing strong relationships with the school’s primary stakeholders – the students. “I want all of the students to have a sense of belonging and help the students engage in learning,” he said.
Bunting is eager to step away from his administrator’s desk and experience the day-to-day life of students. He plans on attending co-curricular and athletic activities and to shadow students for a day.
Bunting moved to Shelburne with his family at the age of eight and now lives in Williston with his wife and two daughters. In addition to his undergraduate degree, Bunting earned a master’s from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Noting that high school innately has a system of checks and balances, Bunting hopes he and the faculty will pass along global citizenship. “The school can help students see what their duties are in the world,” he said.
