Deaths

Frederick C. Evering

March 20, 1936 to Dec. 30, 2014

Frederick C. Evering was born at Baltimore, Md. on March 20, 1936. His father was a dairy farmer and businessman, and his mother a homemaker. He graduated from Loyola High School and the Johns Hopkins University, where he received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1965. That fall he and Veronica Cloos were married and moved to Burlington, where both had careers at the University of Vermont, Fred for 32 years and Veronica for 23. Fred was employed by the National Security Agency for two and a half years, and worked in the UK for Automatic Electric Co. as an exchange student during the summer of 1963. He was a consultant for companies including Black and Decker, the US Federal Court, and the California Department of Public Safety. He also served on the Town of Shelburne Zoning Commission, as president of the Vermont Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Sigma Xi, and as a fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. Fred spent about one third of his time in administration and almost always taught at least one course per semester, his favorite being the introduction to electrical engineering for non-majors. He was Dean of the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Business Administration, and Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. From 1973 to 1986 he was Director of the Large Scale Institute (LSI) Masters Program sponsored by IBM. This was, at the time, one of the largest full-time Industry-University collaborations in the world, bringing 25 mid-career IBM Engineers, and their families, from worldwide locations for an intensive one year Masters Degree in Computer Engineering. In 1997 Fred built a retirement workshop with various wood and metal working tools. He spent many enjoyable hours making clocks, bowls, and automobile, train, and other models. He especially liked the “look and feel” of doing the handwork. Fred and Veronica were active members of the boating community on Lake Champlain for more than 40 years in both sail and power craft. Fred was on the Board of Governors of the Mallets Bay Boat Club and the Lake Champlain Yacht Club. At retirement they cruised the Erie Canal on their own and chartered vessels. Commercial cruises included European Rivers, the Inland Waterway, and Canadian rivers and canals. Fred considered it a great privilege to live on the shore of Lake Champlain for more than 12,000 days. Fred is survived by his sister in law Gisela Evitt of Saratoga Calif.; nephews Steven Evitt of Somerville, Mass.; Glenn Evitt of Toronto, Canada; Eric Evitt of Mountain View, Calif.; five grand nephews, one great-grandniece, and caregiver Candace Pratt of Williston. Candace made his last years the best that they could be. In lieu of flowers please send donations as a memorial gift in the name of Fred Evering to the American Friends Service Committee, online at AFSC.org, or by mail to AFSC Development, 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia, PA 19102.

Diane was married to the love of her life, Bruce Eugene “Gene” Elmore, and they were about to celebrate their 23rd wedding anniversary. She took pride in her neat, orderly house and provided her family and friends with exceptional love, support and devotion. Diane always remembered the small things that made people happy – a special card, ornaments for all the grandkids at Christmas, and her famous chocolate chip cookies. One of her greatest joys was her annual trip to Maine in the summer with her daughter, Kimberly, and her granddaughter, Amanda. They would enjoy the ocean, shopping, playing games, laughter and many lobsters. Diane is survived by her husband, Bruce Eugene Elmore of Shelburne; her daughter with late ex-husband, Neil Drew, Kimberly Ann DeMattio, and granddaughter, Amanda Leigh DeMattio, of Colchester; brother, Arthur B. Wardner Jr., and niece, Victoria Wardner, of Knoxville, Tenn.; mother-in-law, Marjorie “June” Elmore of Burlington; stepdaughters, Monica (Elmore) Massaro and her family of Bedford, Mass., Lucy Miller of Burlington, Mass., and Natasha (Elmore) Theofanidis and her family of Houston, Texas. She also leaves behind her two best friends, Barbara Persico of Lake Placid, N.Y., and Karen Montroy of Malone, N.Y. The trio called themselves the three musketeers. Thank you, our very special neighbors, Richard and Karen Grimm, and John and Teresa Meyer. Thank you, Karen for your many trips to visit Diane. Thank you, John and Teresa for your loving support and the many deck parties. A spring memorial service is planned in Bloomingdale, N.Y., at the Brookside Cemetery. Friends wishing to remember Linda can make memorial contributions to the TriLakes Humane Society in care of the funeral home.

Elizabeth Parkes Drumheller – Shelburne

Elizabeth Parkes Drumheller died peacefully and surrounded by family on Jan. 2, 2015. She was 87. Family and those who knew her will remember her as gracious, loving, selfless, and a devoted wife and mother with an infectious and perpetual smile. Elizabeth was born on Feb. 6, 1927, in Hampstead, Montreal, in Quebec, Canada. Following her education in private schools in Montreal, she married Oscar Drumheller on Feb. 22, 1947, in Hampstead. Oscar and Elizabeth met just before Oscar departed for service with the US Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India Theater during WWII. Oscar kept his promise to marry Elizabeth when he returned home, and the two remained closely in touch during his absence through the exchange of letters, which the family now possesses and cherishes. Elizabeth and Oscar eventually settled in Burlington, and then Shelburne, where they grew their family and became active members of the community. Elizabeth was particularly passionate about her civic endeavors, which included Fortnightly, the Neighbors, and the Klifa Club. She was also regularly in attendance and contributed actively to the College Street Congregational Church in Burlington, and then Trinity Episcopal Church in Shelburne. Elizabeth loved music, and the song “Amazing Grace” in particular. This song will live on in the hearts of those who knew Elizabeth, for she embodied grace. Elizabeth is survived by her three sons, Dan and his wife, Pamela, and children, Dixon and Jane; Thomas and his wife, Beverly; and Philip and his wife, Mary Beth, and children, Kathryn and husband, Christopher Little, Elizabeth and husband, William Nutt, and Alexis. Oscar, with whom Elizabeth cultivated a remarkable marriage of 62 years, died on Dec. 15, 2009. Elizabeth is also survived by her brother, Thomas Parkes of Montreal; and sister, Hughene Boggs of Toronto. Elizabeth’s family wishes to acknowledge warmly the staff members at Addison County Home, Health and Hospice, Gardensong at Eastview in Middlebury, and Terracina Grand in Naples, Fla., for the care and comfort provided to Elizabeth during her final years. Funeral services will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Shelburne in the spring.
