Theatre Kavanah, dedicated to staging the Jewish experience, along with co-sponsors Temple Sinai and Ohavi Zedek will host a one-night-only performance of “Adventures in Mime and Space with Rob Mermin” on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 7pm at North End Studios in Burlington.
Mermin, the founder of Circus Smirkus, will present his memories of training with the legendary French mimes Marcel Marceau and Ettiene Decroux. In addition, he will demonstrate techniques of the art of pantomime and will share rare film clips of Marceau and Decroux performing and teaching, bringing to life the essence of what Marceau called “the eloquent art of silence.” The legacy of Marceau encompasses not only his virtuosity in mime, but also his work in the French Resistance saving Jewish children from the horrors of WWII. Marceau’s life as artist and humanitarian earned him the respect of the world.
Mermin will lead a separate pantomime workshop from 3-5pm at North End Studios, introducing the Marcel Marceau style and the Etienne Decroux Mime Technique. He’ll teach the foundations of the Decroux system, focusing on pantomime acting and use of gesture for the speaking actor. Pre-registration by Sept. 21 for the workshop with a fee of $25 is required. Please reserve your space by Sept. 21 at www.theatrekavanah.org.
Providing another unique perspective on the art of mime, award-winning Vermont author Leda Schubert will also be on hand signing copies of her children’s book, “Monsieur Marceau: Actor Without Words,” and answering questions. “Monsieur Marceau,” a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year, has garnered praise from numerous reviewers since its publication in 2012.
Tickets for “Adventures in Mime and Space” are $18 per person and $15 for students and seniors. For tickets, or to register, go to www.theatrekavanah.org. Tickets will also be available at the door one hour before the show.
