To the Editor:

As two newly elected school board members transition into their roles next week, and as I complete my term, I want to thank the community who provided me with the opportunity to serve for the past 15 years.

Many have described school board service as a “thankless task,” but my experience has been both enriching and gratifying, particularly having witnessed more than 3,000 students cross the stage onto their next step in life.

At the same time, the responsibilities of delivering a quality public education at a cost the community will support have become increasingly complex. That makes it equally difficult for voters to weigh student outcomes with the investment being asked of them.

Ironically, one of the outcomes of the pandemic is the improved opportunity for community engagement. Since meetings are currently conducted via Zoom and are recorded, citizens can access information when it is convenient for them and participate remotely in providing feedback to the board on issues of interest or concern.

I know I benefited as a board member from the enhanced communication with all stakeholders in the district.

We have an incredible school system, for which we all should be very proud.

Thank you for entrusting me in this role and I look forward to welcoming our two new board members.
