Father Jon Schnobrich preached Sunday on the parable of the landlord and workers in the vineyard. He described it as one of the unsettling Gospel readings, as it showed the contrast between divine and human justice. Did it seem just that the landowner would pay the workers who worked the longest hours the same amount as those who worked the shortest?

From the parable, we learn that the landowner paid the latter first also — as they were poor. He showed a kind of justice that was divine. He judged through love and hoped the workers would follow his example. This caused jealousy among the first workers. They acted as if God did not have enough for them all and that life itself is nothing but competition.
